People of every background, age, faith and ability volunteer in different ways. What you can do depends on role requirements and current needs, and every role starts with training and approval.

Supporting membership and active volunteering

Supporting membership

For people who want to back the Shield’s work and stay informed. Supporting membership does not involve taking part in operational activities.

Active volunteering

For people who want to give time in an approved role. Active volunteers complete the checks and training their role requires, then receive approval and a briefing.

Enhanced DBS checks through uCheck for eligible roles

For roles that are eligible, we process Enhanced DBS checks through uCheck. Not every supporter or member will be eligible for an Enhanced check; it depends on the role.

Checks are one part of a wider suitability and safeguarding process. They are not a guarantee of safety, and they do not replace training, oversight and reporting.

Turnaround times vary, so we do not promise a fixed timescale. Volunteers do not take part in authorised activities while required checks are pending.

    Apply through the Shield Hub

    Applications, membership and onboarding are handled in our member platform.

    Complete identity, suitability and background checks

    The checks you need depend on the role you apply for.

    Complete required training

    Training matched to your role, including first aid, de-escalation and safeguarding where relevant.

    Read and agree to our standards

    The Code of Conduct, safeguarding procedures and the member agreement (MOU) that applies to your role.

    Receive role approval and a briefing

    Only then can you take part in authorised activities.

    Keep training current and follow ongoing conduct requirements

    Standards apply for as long as you volunteer with us.
