We Are The Shield

Training & Standards

Prepared, calm and clear about the limits of the role.

Training is matched to each role, delivered online, and must be completed before a volunteer takes part in authorised activities.

“Our training is signed off by clinicians working within the ambulance sector who hold qualifications enabling them to teach and certify the relevant training.”
“Our Designated Safeguarding Lead holds a Level 5 safeguarding qualification.”

Our volunteers are not clinicians, safeguarding professionals or emergency responders. They are members of the community who have been trained for a defined role.

How it's delivered

All training is online.

You can complete it from home, without travelling to a classroom.

New volunteers are shown how to get started when they join. See the volunteering journey.

Core subjects

What volunteers learn, and why it matters to you

First aid

What they learnRecognising when someone is unwell or injured, keeping them safe and getting the right help quickly.

Why it mattersSomeone taken ill in public is more likely to get prompt, sensible help while professionals are on their way.

De-escalation

What they learnStaying calm, listening, using clear language and stepping back when a situation needs other services.

Why it mattersTense moments are less likely to get worse, and volunteers know when to walk away and call for help.

Safeguarding

What they learnRecognising signs that a child or adult may be at risk, and passing concerns to the right route without delay.

Why it mattersConcerns are less likely to be missed and reach the people with authority to act.

Code of Conduct and role boundaries

What they learnWhat volunteers may and may not do, how to treat everyone with respect, and the limits of their authority.

Why it mattersPeople can expect courteous, fair treatment from volunteers who know their limits.

Induction

Every volunteer’s induction covers our reporting routes, including when to call 999 or 101 and how to pass on a safeguarding concern, and how to handle personal information responsibly and lawfully.

Records, kept privately

Training and completion records are managed in the Shield Hub, our member platform. Only the member and authorised people in the organisation can see them. No individual records are published on this website.
